Authors: Hanne Fl\u00e5ten Andersen Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSilicon as anode material\nhas now grown to a mature field, and many degradation phenomena has been\nexplored in detail. For current Li-ion batteries, improvement of the anode\ncapacity beyond approximately 1200 mAh\/g has negligible impact on the overall\ncell capacity. Thus, composite anodes containing both silicon and a\nconventional anode material such as graphite, are sufficient for most\nbatteries. While degradation mechanisms of pure nano-silicon structures have\nbeen studied in detail, similar phenomena specific to composite silicon-carbon\nelectrodes have not. In our work we have focused on understanding how different\ndegradation phenomena evolve during cycling using post-mortem FIB-SEM and TEM\nstudies examining the effect and interplay between the graphite and the silicon\nin composite anodes.
